Ricki Block, MS, CCC-SLP

My Background

  • I have been in the field of Speech Pathology since 1976. I received my Masters Degree from Rutgers University. I was the Practicum Supervisor for a short period of time. I was a Manager of Preschool Therapies for 7 years. I have worked in preschools, elementary, middle and high school. For 5 years I had the opportunity to work in a Special Education program for students 3-21 who had many challenges. There I developed my knowledge for AAC, specifically Proloquo and Touch Chat.

  • I am trained in the PROMPT Method (3 levels) which is a neuromotor approach for sound sequencing. I specialize in Apraxia, Autism & Social Language

  • I am certified in using the Listening Program - a music based listening therapy which improves the ability to process auditory (listening) and vestibular (balance) information, communication, and attention. It is patterned dolby classical music in which the listener hears music from all directions.

  • I have enjoyed working with preschoolers to HS  throughout my career in school settings and in private practice.

  • I also owned a School Supply/Toy Store for 22 years (as well as speech consults/therapy in schools) and offered a large selection of products for children with speech, language, sensory and fine motor needs. I also provided workshops to schools and in the store. Toys and games are my passion.  My office looks like a store!

  • I want to share my wealth of knowledge with others, providing speech professionals, parents, teachers, etc. with pertinent articles, resources, free materials/handouts and products from TPT and BOOM Learning for students of all ages.

  • I love what I do!

Here I am!

Why did I choose a hummingbird for my logo? I LOVE THEM! I anticipate their arrival every May. Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world and they have the freedom to fly in any direction. They come in a variety of beautiful colors. Their name refers to the humming sound made by their tiny beating wings.

Hummingbird Message - “You are beautiful just the way you are.  You have the freedom to be and do things in your life which will make a difference.   Help others share joy.”

Teletherapy

Teletherapy Tech

  • I provide state of the art teletherapy utilizing the ZOOM platform.

  • The monitor screen is shared so we can both see the same thing. The use of 3 monitors provides a seamless transition from one activty to the next.

  • I am no longer using headphone during my sessions. I upgraded my Logitech camera and the sound is so good!

  • Camera is mobile so I can get very close to the lens to show the student how to produce sounds and words. The PROMPT Method of therapy is utilized in a modified fashion which assists the child in proper placement.

  • This is where all the magic happens - creating materials for my students, TPT and BOOM

Materials

  • Books, iPad, and online games are used to engage the students. I use a variety of book sources including EPIC, Online Storytime and Youtube.

  • A special program allows me to mirror the iPad for onllne games. Did you know Zoom has a link you can add in the share screen?

  • The use of pretend play toys can be used for the little ones in the group, e.g. having a tea party, playing ball, animal play, car play, doll house, baby doll and more.

  • Therapy sessions are 30 minutes long.

Teletherapy Office

  • Essential materials for therapy sessions surround my desk and are readily available for a session. This allows for spontaneity

  • Theme boxes maintain order in the space

  • A divider surrounding the space offers less distractions

  • My office is cleaned daily with natural products. It is quiet and HIPPA/FERPA compliant.

In-Person Speech Sessions are now conducted next to a window and near the door. The table is just the right size for preschoolers. I keep materials in drawers, bags, on shelves and in cases. There is a flexible room divider which hides everything. Sanitizer, thermometer, and tissues are close by. So far so good! Looks like my new speech area is going to be permanent for a while!
