THE LATEST SSD RESEARCH! There is some very interesting ground breaking SSD research happening! Included below is an awesome Youtube channel (with Dr. Jenn Moore and Dr. Aravind K Namasivayam) for SSD and a research paper conducted by Dr. Aravind K Namasivayam and colleagues. Evidence from utilizing modern instrumental data supports speech-motor vs purely cognitive linguistic. The question is - DO WE TRUST OUR EARS? The researchers are recommending the use of instrumental tools, e.g. acoustic analysis (spectrograms), electropalatography (EPG) and ultrasound. They advocate a multi-dimensional approach to treatment…not just basing intervention on norms. This is a very in-depth study. If you love to know the nitty gritty details, here’s the link Reevaluating the Classification of Pediatric SSD.
Here is the brand new SSDC Collective Youtube channel Check it out!
Iza is a decorated author who has written numerous rhyme books with a twist! In each book she has added more to the story! I love her rhyme books. As you know I am a big advocate of rhyme, rhythm & prosody to improve speech fluency and inflection. I was fortunate to touch base with Iza today! In 2006 she gave a workshop in my Teacher Store to celebrate Lily's first birthday (Lily was my cat!) Iza drew a pic of Lily and a mouse! Check out pics below. Her website is https://www.izatrapani.com/educator-rescources. She also has educator and parent handouts. (Photo quality not the best - pics are old!)

Speech Moments: Snow has been falling all week in NY! I love it! My students have been on winter break all week. Hopefully speech sessions will start tomorrow! I just finished a PLS-5 eval and working on 3 Annual Review Reports. Love my schedule! Yay to 50 years as an SLP and finally taking time for myself! IT’S WOMEN’S MONTH THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO START CELEBRATING YOURSELF!
I updated 9 Favorite Speech Strategies That Work . The NYU STRIVE FRAMEWORK has been added! I wanted to simplify terminology of all the varied approaches! It can get overwhelming at times - it is not cookie cutter either. Every child has different needs. I utilize a variety of techniques and assess ongoing progress. As a therapist, it's crucial for me to explain a child’s motor speech disorder to parents & staff in a way that’s easy to understand—KISS (Keep It Simple SLP”s!). Ricki’s personal comments are included with each strategy.
