Nov FREEBIES 25 & Autism Research

Hi All! Only 12 days left in October! I just love this month and will be sad when it’s over. Kids are loving all the Halloween and Fall activities we’ve been doing. Check out all the other Freebies & Fall/halloween themes too below. Thank you so much for your support! Being an SLP has been my passion and I still love every moment helping others. I KISS YOU ALL - KEEP IT SIMPLE SPEECHIES! I see so many awesome ideas out there, but to be honest, many are labor intensive! I used to be one of those SLP’s who spent hours organizing and planning.

Sooo - I’ve been following a Dr. Colleen Cira on Instagram. She has been talking about the “Evolution of Autism” which I found very interesting. She has been diagnosed with Autism herself. Her clinical opinion suggests that Autism is a Neurotype (natural variation in brain wiring) and not a disorder (challenges that interfere with daily life). I can see for Level 1 & 2 but questioning Level 3. What are your thoughts on this? Here is the newest article I could find - Science Daily Sept 28, 2025 Did you know that 1 out of 31 children in the US are diagnosed with ASD? In the article, researchers discovered that autism’s prevalence may be linked to human brain evolution. There are diverse shifts in brain configuration may have slowed brain development in children while boosting language and cognition. Every child is different. We need to value neurodiversity, support needs and avoid labeling people. In addition, schools need to be trained in providing supports, e.g. social, sensory in the classroom. Ideally, the language and model should be context-sensitive: in advocacy and inclusion work, Neurotype is helpful; in clinical support and intervention work. Disorder and functional challenges are real and must be addressed as well.

Here are some interesting books I want to read: 1. Neurodiversity: The Birth of an Idea by Judy Singer 2. Neurociversity: The New Social Order by Steve Silberman 3. Uniquely Human: A different way of seeing Autism by Barry Prizant. (I have followed Barry Prizant for years.) I would love your feedback if you have read any of these books!

I created 8 Favorite Speech Strategies That Work (12 pgs) because I wanted to simplify terminology of all the varied approaches! It can get overwhelming at times - it is not cookie cutter either. Every child has different needs. I utilize a variety of techniques and assess ongoing progress. As a therapist, it's crucial for me to explain a child’s motor speech disorder to parents & staff in a way that’s easy to understand—KISS (Keep It Simple SLP”s!).
