What Do STEM & Speech Therapy Have In Common?

Learn what STEM is all about

Hi All! How is everything going? I hope your caseloads are manageable and you are enjoying your students! I had the summer off for the first time in my 49 year career and wasn’t sure how I would feel working, but so far it’s ok! I only have 3 students in my home office and love it! Two students are repeats. I was surprised when mom brought my new student and his brother and sister as well. It was a little chaotic! We will see how it goes!

I have always been enamored with the varied levels of Following Directions. I’ve included 2 FREE handouts and 1 Sample Shapes Boom activity below about following directions. I embed linguistic concepts in critical elements. My new series combines STEM LEARNING with listening comprehension! I have already been testing the activities with my students and they LOVE IT! I use the timer on my phone so they know when it’s time to clean up. Two resources are FREE for now including Matching Sensory Fidget Shapes & Colors and Matching Fidget Balls & Animals. Two resources will be half price for a limited time and COMING SOON - Following Directions with Magnet Tiles and Following Directions with Magnet People.

What is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. It’s an approach to learning that integrates these subjects through hands-on, problem-solving activities. Instead of teaching each subject in isolation, STEM encourages children to apply knowledge across different areas, just like they would in real-world problem solving. Why Do STEM and  Speech Therapy Go Together - When we pair STEM activities (e.g. magnet block building) with speech-language goals we provide an opportunity for :  1.Concrete, motivating hands-on learning to incorporate language skills 2.Support listening comprehension, sequencing & vocabulary in the same way they’ll need to follow instructions in the classroom. 3.Support success in reading comprehension and problem solving 4.Creative challenges during a functional language activity.  Speech skills can be addressed too

Thank you so much for your support! Being an SLP has been my passion and I still love every moment helping others. I KISS YOU ALL - KEEP IT SIMPLE SPEECHIES! I see so many awesome ideas out there, but to be honest, many are labor intensive! I used to be one of those SLP’s who spent hours organizing and planning.

Here you’ll find: lists of the best predictable books for SSD & apraxia….with your input!! Ideas for therapy activities, extension tasks, and adaptations

Speech Moments - Below are the books & links mentioned for back to school in our Predictable Books Facebook Group. This week we posted below:

I created 8 Favorite Speech Strategies That Work (12 pgs) because I wanted to simplify terminology of all the varied approaches! It can get overwhelming at times - it is not cookie cutter either. Every child has different needs. I utilize a variety of techniques and assess ongoing progress. As a therapist, it's crucial for me to explain a child’s motor speech disorder to parents & staff in a way that’s easy to understand—KISS (Keep It Simple SLP”s!).
